Everyone wants to know the status of a certain relationship in The Vampire Diaries Season 5, and executive producer Julie Plec was willing to spill some details at this year’s ATX Television Festival in Austin. She and Arielle Kebbel were on hand for a Q&A session at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and Julie dropped some hints about Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Damon‘s (Ian Somerhalder) future.
It sounds like they'll actually be a couple. We'll see them in a “new relationship,” Julie says, where Damon and Elena “try to make it work.” Naturally, things won't be smooth sailing, though.
One of the problems plaguing their happiness? A “villain in their midst they don’t know is a villain at the beginning,” says Julie. Hm, could this be Stefan (Paul Wesley)/Silas we're talking about? One would think a 2,000-year-old immortal would have better things to do than mess with a teenager and her boyfriend, but Silas only has a thousand years on Rebekah (Claire Holt), and that's one of her favorite activities.
Julie also admitted she was surprised at how many Delena shippers there were right out of the gate. When asked whether we’ll see a long-wished-for scene of Damon and Elena kissing in the rain, Julie replied, "Yeah, for sure, anything is possible."
