The 34-year-old actor has been posting messages as well on the social networking site Twitter to update his almost 4 million followers about what is happening on the set. "Being on a television show is sort of like a marriage so it's nice. Lovers need space from their togetherness. Actors need space from their television show. So it's a nice little bit of separation," Ian stated.
The Vampire Diaries cast has been working on other projects during their well-deserved break but they will be reuniting to work again on the fifth season of the show. Co-star Kat Graham divulged that the cast loves to bond together, go out for a meal and even hang out after a busy day on the set.
"We go to dinner a lot as a cast together so I really love that. I love food and I love family. We have these huge, long table dinners and they're really fun. We are a cast that really does love each other and hang out together," Graham told OK! U.S. edition.
Ian's return on the Vampire Diaries set had the fans and media wonder how he deals with seeing and working with ex-girlfriend Nina Dobrev. However, insiders continue to insist that the set will not have an uncomfortable environment even though Ian and Nina broke up.

Auditioning for "Highschool Musical 5 : Turks and Caicos Beach Edition". Haha

James, it's safe to assume that Ian Somerhalder could be cast as Christian Grey. Here are five hints why the "Vampire Diaries" star could be starring in the S&M film adaptation.

Universal Studios and Focus Features have secured the rights to producing E.L. James' erotica novel, "Fifty Shades of Grey." To date, scriptwriter Kelly Marcel is adding a few finishing touches to the script. With director Sam Taylor-Johnson having joined the bandwagon last month, it'll only be a few days more wait before an official cast is revealed.

The film adaptation is set for release on August 2014. Numerous casting polls have been up on the web with fans naming their favourites for the role of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. Ian Somerhalder Admits He's 'Married' To Vampire Diaries Cast: 'It's Nice To Get Separation'

Ian Somerhalder returned to the set of the Vampire Diaries yesterday and people were quick to question whether or not things would be awkward between him and alleged ex Nina Dobrev, but the actor recently sat down for a chat with EntertainmentWise and told us that he's basically "married" to his co-stars because they have a super close bond.
Ian shot to fame alongside brunette beauty Nina on the hit TV show and presenter Georgie Barrat quizzed the hunk on how he felt about returning to the set.
Ian tells us, when asked if he was looking forward to it: "Yeah of course. yeah absolutely, Being on a television show, we're going into season 5, we've shot 89 of them we're going into episode 90."
He then added that he was basically "married" to his co-stars because they spend so much time together, saying: "Being on a television show is sort of like a marriage so it's nice. Lovers need space from their togetherness. Actors need space from their television show. So it's a nice little bit of separation."
And when asked about his break, Ian added: "I'm on that break right now but I am definitely looking forward to going back and seeing my Vampire Diaries family."
But, will there be any awkward moments on set with his recent ex?
The showbiz couple have parted ways since the show was last in production. However, a source tells us that the atmosphere between the pair won't be weird: "I think you become really good friends with that person when you see them everyday anyway so I think they obviously knew that getting into a relationship," they said.
"But I don't think it would be awkward for them. They are both well rounded people."
Well, thank goodness for that.

Ian Somerhalder & Nina Dobrev Are Proving They Can Handle Being Back Together

Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev's breakup was like a shot to the heart for many a Vampire Diaries fan. Thus, while they're no Robsten, I'm sure there are plenty of people hoping that the reunion of Elena and Damon on-screen will lead the exes to get back together off-screen. Now that they're headed back on set, of course it's a possibility. But the only evidence we have so far points to both parties being prepared to be civil with one another ...
A source tells Entertainmentwise, "I think you become really good friends with that person when you see them every day anyway so I think they obviously knew that getting into a relationship. But I don’t think it would be awkward for [Ian and Nina]. They are both well rounded people." And they've also supposedly taken a mature first step to ensuring it's all smooth sailing once shooting resumes ...

Sources tell Celebrity Dirty Laundry, "Nina and Ian are back in touch after several months spent apart." But sparks aren't flying. It just "means that they are doing everything possible to keep things as least awkward as possible." Well, hey, that's still good news, right?

Not only because they have to be able to get along for professional reasons, but also because it never hurts to be able to play nice with an ex. And when I say nice, I don't mean passive-aggressive or semi-bitchy or having any sort of ulterior motive. I mean being straight-up KIND and genuinely being on good terms.

Granted, that's much easier said than done depending on the specifics of the breakup! I have a couple exes I could never in a million years see myself being able to have a jovial, good-natured, civil relationship with, because we parted ways on horrible terms. But I'm lucky in that I'm actually still friendly with most of the guys I dated before meeting my husband. Maybe it's easier because we've both moved on and are engaged or married to other people now, but there's more to it than that. It's about both of you being mature enough to know when to say when and to be above, beyond, past hard feelings. Don't get me wrong. Years, space, and new significant others who are a better fit definitely help!

Unfortunately, those are things Ian and Nina don't have going for them. But they do have a pretty sweet gig they share, so for at least their careers' sakes, let's hope they can put hard feelings on the back burner and just get along.

Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev & More TV Stars Strip Down For Summer

Beaches! Bikinis! Betrothals? Browse our gallery of TV stars from ‘Vampire Diaries,’ ‘Glee’ & More.

As much as we’re enjoying summer TV, we can’t help but wonder what our favorite fall-to-spring stars are up to. In that spirit of curiosity, HollywoodLife.com put together a list (and gallery) of our small-screen favorites soaking up every last ounce of summer.

‘The Vampire Diaries’: Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev & Candice Accola

During a European tour — work-related, unfortunately — a sleep-deprived Ian Somerhalder tweeted a slightly spooky shirtless selfie from his Moscow hotel room. I’m not sure why he looked so tired, though. Aren’t vampires supposed to be night owls?
One of Ian’s Vampire Diaries co-stars, meanwhile, chose to start her summer in sunlight. Nina Dobrev was spotted sporting a bikini in April — she got an early jump on the season — with some celebrity friends.

And then there was Candice Accola. Eternally unlucky in love as Caroline Forbes, Candice turned out to be pretty lucky in real life, as her boyfriend – The Fray member Joseph Aaron King – popped the question during the couple’s European vacation!

‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 5 notes: Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev, and travel

There is little question that Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev have managed to do something pretty incredible over the past several weeks. They have traveled so much that professional sports teams would likely even faint at the sight of their travel itineraries. These two “Vampire Diaries” stars have been everywhere from Europe to islands to several major cities across America, but it is finally starting to feel like we are nearing the end of the road when it comes to travel.
For now, though, Ian is continuing to travel through what may be one of his last major destinations on his trip in Italy. In a post on his Twitter account this weekend, he had the following to say about flying with such regularity, while giving out a subtle message about the environment in the process:
“Taking off to another beautiful Italian destination!Love this country;)Really cant wait till these giant birds fly on biofuels though.”
While Ian has been traveling almost for the entire time since leaving “The Vampire Diaries” set this spring, Nina stayed in Atlanta (where the show films) for several more weeks working on the movie “Let’s Be Cops” before finally deciding recently to embark on a mega-trip that took her to multiple continents and even more countries over the course of just a few weeks. Based on this message, though, it seems like she is doing her best to start to settle into life in Atlanta:
“That moment when you walk outdoors in Atlanta and start sweating profusely…and then you realize you’re still wearing a winter sweater because you we’re freezing from the AC inside.”

Ian Somerhalder’s Damon And Nina Dobrev’s Elena: What To Expect Of Their Love Affair On Season 5 Of The Vampire Diaries

So the season 4 of The Vampire Diaries ended with Elena Gilbert revealing her love for Damon Salvatore, with Stefan overhearing the confession with tears in his eyes.  When the crew and cast shot this scene, Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder were still dating.
Now, they are no longer dating. How is this going to affect Elena and Damon’s relationship on the show going forward? Well, the showrunners ultimately make that decision, but we’ve speculated about the various scenarios that they could use.
There’s always the possibility that the writers will ignore the real-life drama and breakup between Nina and Ian, and continue with the Elena/Damon romance. However, this works best if Nina and Ian are still ‘best friends’, which may not necessarily be the case. And even if they’ve remained friends after their breakup, there’s no way that it won’t be awkward for them to film love scenes together.
Then, there’s the more likely possibility that they’ll stay together for a while, and then the writers will find a quick and easy way to break them up. Death is unlikely since Elena and Damon are two of the three central characters on the show. However, they could pretend Elena went crazy when she told Damon she loved him. Um… ok, I’ll come back to that.
But really, this is the Vampire Diaries. It’s not going to be hard to come up with a reason to break up Elena and Damon, especially with Paul Wesley’s Stefan still clearly having feelings for Elena. That love triangle has always been central to the story, and fans of the show are pretty much split between the Damon/Elena camp and the Stefan/Elena camp.
