When it comes to the stars of “The Vampire Diaries,” Ian Somerhalder gets most of the press for his planet- and animal-loving ways. However, his co-star (and ex-girlfriend!) Nina Dobrev also embraces an animal-friendly lifestyle, albeit in a quieter way.
Dobrev’s dietary choices first made headlines in 2011 after she told Seventeen magazine that she had tried vegetarianism — and given it up.
“I tried being a vegetarian for four months,” Dobrev said, “and after a while, I started feeling weak, like I needed more protein, more energy. Then I read a review an episode of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ online, and in it the writer mentioned that I was looking too thin. I was like, ‘Okay, maybe they’re right.’ It made me think: I need a burger — a beef burger, not a soy burger.”
Many pro-vegetarians weren’t thrilled with her admission, since it implied that being vegetarian also meant being unhealthy. But Dobrev recently gave the veg lifestyle another try, and this time it seems to be working.
According to Vegetarian Star, going meatless and incorporating yoga into her life have given the actress newfound energy. And although she doesn’t label herself a vegan, she did say, “I’m not officially a vegan, but I eat mostly vegan food.”
And, after struggling with being too thin, she’s found a way to maintain a healthy weight, by pairing her plant-based diet with a centering, toning fitness plan.
“Yoga changed my body 100 percent. It tones everything and leans you out. Dancer’s pose is amazing. It works every muscle! And you have to focus. If your mind is somewhere else, you’ll fall,” she told SELF magazine.
It may have taken some experimentation to find the right path, but kudos to Dobrev for listening to her body and finding a healthy balance that makes her feel her best.
