At it’s best, The Vampire Diaries is heart-wrenching, compelling, and unpredictable — and it sounds like we might be in for its best in the Season 5 finale. What did executive producer Caroline Dries tell Zap2it about the season ender?
"The finale will be emotional," Caroline teased. "We'll get to see a lot of our favorite friends from the past possibly pop in. Basically, every place on the show where s—t can possibly go wrong, it goes wrong. Just when you think, oh it can't get worse than that, it does."
There’s a lot of unpack in that spoiler. First of all, we’re beyond excited that we’ll be getting to hang with some of our “favorite friends.” Here’s to hoping Alaric makes an appearance because we already know Kol will be popping around. As for the hint that everything that can go wrong, will, we’re now worried about our “favorite friends.” Why? Because executive producer Julie Plec teased: "There are going to be a lot of goodbyes as we realize The Other Side is disintegrating and not everybody is going to survive that. We're going to have to say goodbye to some characters that we've grown to love over the years."
Like, goodbye for real! No more hanging out with the characters who have passed on on special occasions. No more knowing that there is a chance these characters could come back for-real someday. Only cold, finite death. You know, the old-fashioned kind that happens on non-genre shows. We’re not sure if we’re prepared for this. Caroline is right about one thing: if we’re losing our long-time TV chums forever, the finale will be emotional. Ugly-crying emotional.
