Vampire Diaries cast, producers reveal season five spoilers

The cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries have discussed what is in store on the CW's supernatural drama.

Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley joined executive producers Julie Plec and Caroline Dries to answer fans' questions at PaleyFest yesterday (March 22).

Up for discussion were Elena's (Nina Dobrev) relationships with Salvatore brothers Damon (Ian Somerholder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley), Caroline's (Candice Accola) future on the show and Wesley's directorial debut.

Despite her more recent relationship with Damon, Elena could be seen getting close to Stefan again, with Dries telling the crowd that they can expect to see the couple - dubbed 'Stelena' - "as we've never seen them before".

She went on to describe the scenes as "nostalgic", while Wesley added that the moments would be "reminiscent of season one", when the pair were a couple.

The producers also teased at another potential romance between Caroline and Stefan.

"Caroline and Stefan have a lot to do together in the next couple episodes," Plec said. "They go through some stuff together."Plec seemingly confirmed that Accola will remain on the show for the foreseeable future, describing the vampire Caroline as a "crucial element" to the drama.

She added: "Taking her off the show would be very damaging."

The group also discussed Wesley's upcoming directorial debut on an episode of the show, which will air on April 17.

Wesley described the experience as "amazing", adding: "I was expecting [the cast] to really haze me."

The actor recalled how Dobrev had left him a good luck present in his dressing room on his first day of directing.

He revealed that the gift was a portrait of the actress, saying: "It was huge, and now it's hanging in my dressing room."

The Vampire Diaries was renewed for a sixth season last month, while spinoff The Originals was picked up for a second series.
