‘The Vampire Diaries’: Katherine’s fate is sealed

Those of you who are caught up on The Vampire Diaries know that when it ended there was a major “WTF” factor that left us wondering what will happen with Katherine Pierce. Executive producer Caroline Dries explains things a little bit more, but one thing is certain: What’s done is done.
In a recent interview with TV Guide, Dries reveals that Katherine Pierce is gone for good and we will not be seeing her again. What’s even more interesting, and what’s sparking the debate, is that she’s apparently gone to some other void, almost equivalent to Hell.
Hesitant to actually name the location of Katherine’s new home, Dries explains that it isn’t necessarily Hell, but it’s the same concept. “It’s unlike anything we’ve seen before,” she explains.“We’ve seen characters appear to Bonnie, the anchor, and go through Bonnie and that’s their initiation into the other side. When Katherine died, that didn’t happen and [instead] she’s ripped out of Bonnie’s arms and sucked into wherever by some dark void. We don’t say anything religious like Heaven or Hell, but that’s the implication — she’s going to a dark world.”
If you’re hoping that Katherine may turn up from this “dark world” then we have some bad news for you – the answer is a definite no. More so, Dries goes on to state that what exactly happened with Katherine will not be further explored.
“I don’t think we’ll explore it so much as in the future, we’ll use something similar happening like that on the other side where it becomes a bit of disarray over there and people get sucked into oblivion. What we wanted when we were writing the Katherine story line this season was to really deliver on her as a character. This show is known for bringing people back to the dead, so death didn’t ever feel final; they could hop over from the other side if we feel desperate. So we wanted to say, ‘No, she’s gone.’”

We hope you enjoyed Katherine’s run while it lasted, because it’s finally over. It seems, though, that this “dark world” and whatever it is up to, as Katherine asked herself just before she vanished, will be making more waves in the season.
Now that Elena is infected with a deadly concoction of the virus, they’re going to have to figure a way out of this. Dries explains, “Elena is dealing with the turmoil and emotional damage left in Katherine’s wake, but Elena is also dying. This virus is killing her. Two of our main characters have this incurable virus and they want to kill everyone, so what do they do? Our guys will have to make a deal with the devil to save their friends.”
Could she mean this literally? Perhaps the devil they’re talking about is the same devil that decided Katherine Pierce gets to go to the dark world. And we’re sure you’re wondering why Katherine had to go, and never come back – the answer is that it was apparently a necessary evil. “Last season there was the tentpole episode where Jeremy died and then we had Elena before Jeremy and Elena after Jeremy. It helped with the plot so much in terms of emotional character movement,” Dries says. “So we knew we needed to have a big splash [this season], but also Katherine has been so instrumental to all the story lines this season and at some point it has to end — but it has to matter. So that’s what we did and then we threw a twist in there to shock people a little bit.”
…okay then. We, personally, don’t understand why Katherine (of all people) had to go to this “dark world” or why she had to be gone for good. While it’s acceptable that they needed to come up with some way for supernatural characters that died to stay dead and out of the story, it’s more unacceptable that it had to be Katherine Pierce going to Hell.
The fandom is confused, irritated, and annoyed. The implication here is that Katherine got sent to some version of Hell, regardless of if that’s what Dries and team are calling it, and the idea that Katherine is the most evil of all The Vampire Diaries characters is just not by any means correct.
We’re hoping that whatever, or whoever, decided to send Katherine to the “dark world” has a personal vendetta against the character because when it comes to humanity, and redeem-ability, Katherine was definitely on the list of anti-villain and not actual villain.
To say that Katherine is more evil than all of the Original vampires, Silas, the hunters and Esther is a bit of a stretch. If she’s gone to this dark void then surely all of our favorite vampires are screwed – this includes Klaus, Elijah, Rebekah, Damon, Stefan (The Ripper), and more. It would make absolutely way more sense if this was a personal choice of someone on the other side who’s suddenly got a lot of power, than it would be an overall decision/outweighing of how evil a character is.
Some can argue that because we didn’t know who the anchor was it’s possible that Esther and Mikael were also sent to this oblivion, but we know that Kol was on the Other Side when he reappeared season 4, episode 22 “The Walking Dead,” and that means that according to show’s dynamics Katherine is more evil than Kol, and we don’t buy that for a second.
We’ll just have to wait and see what this means for the rest of our favorite gang on The Vampire Diaries when the fifth season comes to a close this year.
