Julie Plec reveals what’s next for Damon and Elena on The Vampire Diaries

They’ve come a long way, but The Vampire Diaries lovebirds bloodthirty predators Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) are officially a non-sired couple by the end of Season 4. This may or may not be the start of great things to come in Season 5, and showrunner Julie Plec has spilled a few careful words as to where Delena is headed. The challenge with Damon and Elena’s attraction was the sire bond they had for each other. Damon doubts Elena’s feelings are real, and Elena tries her hardest to believe it was real. Now, without the sire bond, doubts are thrown out the window and they’ll live happily ever after. Right?
In an interview with Hollywood Life, Plec offers some insight to Delena’s new relationship post sire bond. During the ATX TV Festival in Austin, Plec said Damon and Elena “will try to make it work”, but their new found happiness will be cut short by an unexpected villain.
Knowing Elena and Damon, they’re both stubborn and determined when they set their mind into things, so someone getting between them will have a challenge.
Even without villains, it’s still very much possible that their personalities will at some point clash, as we’ve often seen in the past four seasons. Surely Elena had more heated arguments with Damon than with Stefan.
Plec didn’t offer more information about who the villain might be, or whether Delena will still be together by the end of the season. She does, however, confirm that Damon and Elena will have their fun at the start of Season 5, before life gets complicated — yet again.
The Vampire Diaries returns on The CW this fall. No premiere date has been announced as of yet.
